What do you crave?
Chocolate, crisps, jellies, cake, biscuits, crackers, takeaway, ice-cream, pizza, fizzy sugary drinks and the list can go on. We all crave some of those or most of those any time of the day, month or year. They are subconscious cravings.
If you want to reduce these cravings to a minimum, keep reading. If you are fully aware of your food choices, then look forward to the next blog post.
There is plenty of research literature on the topic of junk food and the mechanisms that make us crave more :
- Lack of sleep. Simple. Your body does not get enough rest and is trying to compensate and you crave sugar- quick fix for your energy and brain functioning.
- Vitamin and mineral deficiency
- Junk food triggers physiological reaction similar to the cocaine or heroine. So we want more and more of it. Sugar can be addictive?
- Boredom. This is self-explanatory.
- You did not consume enough calories during your meal
- You don’t eat enough protein rich food and greens
- Stress, stress and stress
Trick Your Mind
Let’s agree, all of us crave junk food now and again and that is ok. However, what do we do if we want to stop or manage those cravings and turn them into an occasional treat?
What if I told you that food cravings are in your head? They are created mainly by a thought that you have about it:
“ I want chocolate because it will make my mood better.”
“ I want crisps because they are nice and salty.”
“ I want both chocolate and crisps because they are comforting.”
All of the above are habitual thoughts that lead us to a vicious circle. It is not easy to break it, unless you are aware of it. The mind has enormous power over us but it does not mean you have to always go with its influences. The choice is yours. Next time, when you have a craving for some junk food, try this:
- Tell yourself that you can have this food in an hour or so.
- Tell yourself that you will have it tomorrow and think about it intensely. Trust me, the craving will go away.
- Eat a piece of fruit or a piece of veg instead and see what happens. The craving will go away.
- Eat a snack/meal rich in protein. The craving will go away and you will be more satisfied.
Never Skip Breakfast!
Research shows that a good protein rich breakfast may lower food cravings later in the day. If you skip breakfast the cravings will continue to rise.
If you are busy and don’t have time to make breakfast in the morning, try soaked oats.
- Soak 50 g of oats in water or almond milk overnight
- Add your favourite yogurt, honey or jam
- Add berries, seeds and/or nuts
- Bring in your lunch box to work if you are short on time or in a hurry
Love yourself and love your food!
