To Coach Or Not To Coach

The Beginning

Born in Latvia during the Soviet Union times, I was raised in a very specific environment with quite conservative perspectives, political views and attitudes to life. The definition of success and happiness was a degree and a good job for life. Like everyone else, I followed this path and got a degree in English Literature and Linguistics. Having worked in a number of jobs that ranged from shop assistant to telesales, I came to realise I was living the life of someone else.

My introduction to the word coaching came just after failing a skill assessment. The individual who suggested it to me did so in a very blunt manner. My ego would not permit me to take this feedback on board. His recommendations seemed too fluffy and confusing.

However, in spite of my misgivings, one year later I found myself on a life coach training course. The trainer kicked off by saying ‘This course will change your life!’. I nearly fell off my chair, thinking: ‘ Who are you to make such an ambitious statement?! My life is way too complicated…’

 What is Coaching?

A lot of us tend to get confused by the concept of coaching. Of course we do! Even coaches themselves can at times become confused about what it is they are doing. One well known  Irish coach said: ‘Coaching is doing nothing with style’ 🙂 Essentially, coaching is a dialog between a coach and a client where the role of the coach is to help the client to be their best self and live the life they dream of. This is done through the question and answer session by raising client’s awareness around their behaviours, thoughts and actions, primarily those that are limiting in nature and inhibiting the client.

Whether you call it career, relationship or nutrition coaching, the essence is the same, it is a dynamic technique that has helped millions to be their best whatever it is they are after. Remember, this is not a therapy or counselling session and neither it is mentoring. Each of these are similar to coaching in a way but yet so different. Both therapy and counselling are about guidance and past events, when coaching is about where you are now. Mentoring is done by the expert in certain area be it sales or public speaking. In a coaching session you will be asked questions that will help you to get clarity around limiting thinking patterns and move away from those.

As a client, all you need to do is sit back, relax and be open to the experience.

  “Coaching is Not for Me”

There is no such thing as “Coaching is not for me”.  Although I can understand where this statement is coming from, it can be classified as a limiting belief and should not be taken seriously. Anyone can be coached. It is simple, but not easy. If the coach does a good job in raising client’s awareness, the client should have plenty of material to work on when they go home. It can be tough work but the good news is that the awareness you get is yours for good and no one can take it away from you.

I still remember my very first coaching session where I went from being extremely nervous and not even quite sure why I ever agreed to meet with a coach to a feeling of being truly listened to without being judged. What a relief! I then continued to receive coaching and took many more sessions. In those I finally discovered that the world does not revolve around me ( surprise!) and I take way too many things personally which brings me down time and again. It was at times emotionally exhausting but so rewarding afterwards. My life has completely changed.
